James Talarico isn’t a vegan. But that was never the point.
By Kai Ma At a 1984 debate, former Vice President Walter Mondale took aim at the lack of depth of one of his Democratic rivals’ campaign platforms by quoting a popular Wendy’s commercial: “Where’s the beef?”
Republicans are now using the same line, but they mean it literally.
In recent days, Texas Senate candidate Ken Paxton, other state Republicans and conservative media have attacked Democratic nominee James Talarico for having a vegan girlfriend and possibly even being vegan himself.
The latest beef began when the New York Post revealed the identity of Talarico’s girlfriend, Brianna Menard, in a story that was downright obsessed with her diet, referring to her as his “tofu-loving girlfriend,” “a vegan political lobbyist” and “a committed vegan” in a story whose very headline included the fact that she’s vegan. Even vegans don’t talk this much about being vegan.
Talarico hit back, calling the claim that he’s a vegan a lie and adding snarkily that he’s “been eating barbecue since before Ken Paxton’s first indictment.”
But this wasn’t the first time Republicans threw red meat to their base over Talarico’s supposed diet. After he ordered potato, egg and cheese breakfast tacos during a visit to a taco restaurant in May, Republican Gov. Greg Abbott argued that he is “not beating the vegetarian allegations.” (Notably, eggs and cheese are not vegan.) President Donald Trump then chimed in, again claiming that Talarico is a vegan and saying “you can’t get elected as a vegan in Texas.” In his victory speech after the Republican primary runoff, Paxton tagged him with the nickname “Tofu Talarico” and accused him of being vegan, while Texas Sen. Ted Cruz claimed that Talarico “wants to BAN BBQ” because of remarks he’s made about reducing meat consumption to fight climate change.
BREAKING: "Shut up you ugly f*ck" — The official Democratic account on X claps back at Stephen Miller after he insanely accused Democratic candidate James Talarico of being "transgender." The gloves have really come off now... "The Democrats made history in Texas by nominating their first transgender senate candidate," Miller wrote in response to a tweet by the Democratic X account touting Talarico's run for the Senate in Texas. "shut up you ugly ," the Democrats' official account responded. The response immediately went viral, with many liberals cheering on the party for refusing to play polite with a monster like Miller. Republicans predictably clutched their pearls and decried the lack of civility — a rich complaint coming from a party led by a profane pedophile. To point out the incredibly obvious here: James Talarico is not transgender. He is a cisgender, heterosexual Christian man with a loving girlfriend. Of course, even if he were trans (or nonbinary or gay or any other identity) that would in no way affect his ability to serve the people of Texas. What matters are his politics. Miller's shamefully dishonest attack is proof positive that Republicans are in full-blown panic mode over Talarico's candidacy. He's going up against Ken Paxton, an indicted fraudster and philanderer who was impeached by his own party for taking bribes as state attorney general. Republicans know that they have nothing to offer Texans in the way of policy, so they're resorting to baseless claims. They have also asserted that Talarico is a vegan, which he is not. The gist of their campaign seems to be that he is insufficiently masculine to represent Texas in the Senate, which shows you just how little conservatives think of voters. They believe that if they throw enough culture war rubbish into the mix, Americans will cease to care about the price of groceries and skyrocketing gas. It won't work. What do you think? Is it okay for Democrats to use this kind of language when dealing with psychopaths like Stephen Miller?
