Former defense minister Yoav Gallant said Wednesday he will not run for office this year.

“I’ve decided not to run in the upcoming elections,” he told Channel 12. “I’m taking a break. As for the future — we’ll talk about that later. If an opportunity arises to have an impact, I’ll step up and answer the call.”

Gallant did not say explicitly why he wouldn’t run in the next election, which is scheduled to take place by late October. But his decision comes nearly 18 months after he was fired by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the middle of the war in Gaza, and as he has continued to harshly criticize the premier.

Trump assured Netanyahu of no compromise on Iran uranium issue: Israeli media

US President Donald Trump assured Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that Washington would not compromise on Iran’s uranium issue, Israeli media reported Saturday, as Israel closely monitors the future of US-Iran talks.

Channel 13 quoted an unnamed Israeli official who said Tel Aviv remained in a state of “constant anticipation” about Trump’s expected decision on Iran.

Israeli military and intelligence officials presented Netanyahu with increasingly aggressive positions toward Tehran during recent discussions, according to the report.

The Israeli army reportedly views the state of Iran’s military capabilities as an “operational opportunity” to resume attacks and “finish the mission,” while the Mossad believes a renewed war could accelerate the collapse of the Iranian regime.

The official added that Israeli leaders were careful not to appear panicked or give the impression they were pressuring Washington on military escalation.

Earlier this week, Trump expressed optimism about talks with Iran, saying discussions had been “very good” and that the war would “be over quickly.”

He also said Washington expected to receive Tehran’s response “very soon” to a US proposal aimed at ending the war.

Regional tensions have sharply escalated since the US and Israel launched strikes against Iran, triggering Iranian retaliation against Israel and American allies in the Gulf, along with the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

《經濟學人》（The Economist）報導，3月30日以色列國會通過2026年的年度預算，納坦雅胡（Benjamin Netanyahu）在預算案裡頭，塞入許多優惠宗教團體和約旦河西岸屯墾區的條款，確保重要票倉的支持。大選前夕通過年度預算，意味著納坦雅胡以及執政聯盟很有可能完成整整四年的任期，這兩項成就都非常罕見，出乎所有人意料，尤其2023年10月7日以色列南部遭到哈馬斯（Hamas）襲擊，這被視作開國以來情報系統和軍方最嚴重的安全失誤。

納坦雅胡領導的以色列聯合黨（Likud）近幾週支持率略微上升，但不足以取得最多席次，也無法確保本屆政府能夠連任，大多數民調顯示，執政聯盟在國會120席中，僅能贏得52或53席。另一方面，聯合黨支持率上升的代價，是犧牲盟友的政治主張。執政聯盟的極端正統派政黨堅持年輕的正統派猶太教徒豁免兵役，因此支持率特別低，其中以色列國家宗教黨（National Religious Party）的預估得票率將低於3.25%的選舉門檻，恐怕無法獲得國會席次。儘管執政聯盟保持團結通過預算案，並通過極具爭議的死刑法案，允許對因「致命攻擊以色列人」而被以恐怖罪名定罪的巴勒斯坦人處以死刑，但執政聯盟成員在許多立法議題上爭執不斷。

以色列的反對派陣營也長期存在分裂，國會中的六個反對派政黨難以彼此合作，另外還有至少三個政黨摩拳擦掌準備下屆大選；反對黨之一、新希望黨（New Hope）黨魁薩爾（Gideon Sa'ar）於2024年入閣，出任外交部長。以色列施行的比例代表制對大黨有利，納坦雅胡擅於說服盟友放下歧見組成聯盟，而且反對派尚未就總理人選達成共識——在2022年11月的上屆大選中，拉皮德（Yair Lapid）領導的中間派「擁有未來黨」（Yesh Atid）成為主要反對派，不過此後該黨支持率大幅下滑。2023年哈瑪斯襲擊之後，前國防部長與候補總理甘茨（Benny Gantz）曾短暫加入戰時內閣，一度被視為取代納坦雅胡的熱門人選，不過他對加薩戰爭等國防事務含糊其詞，因而失去支持，甘茨領導的中間派藍白聯盟（Blue and White）現在甚至無法達到選舉門檻。

長年來，前總理班奈特（Naftali Bennett）一直是納坦雅胡的強力競爭對手，過去一年裡他的支持率也一路攀升，似乎有望挑戰納坦雅胡。然而近幾週，班奈特領導的極右翼「新右派黨」（New Right）支持率卻出現下滑趨勢，被中間派軍事領袖艾森科特（Gadi Eisenkot）脫離藍白聯盟組建的「正直黨」（Yashar）超越。

反對派包含了民族主義、伊斯蘭保守主義、阿拉伯共產主義等意識形態，就算這些立場迥異的反對黨能夠團結起來，推舉一位領袖，甚至贏得國會多數席次，要他們協商組成執政聯盟也絕非易事。相較之下，納坦雅胡的執政聯盟由極右翼和極端宗教政黨組成，在政策方向上大致保持一致，因此，即便聯合黨無法在下屆大選中贏得多數席次，納坦雅胡仍有機會保住大位。

如果美國和以色列取得最後勝利，納坦雅胡的支持率將會上升，連任難度也會降低。反之，如果中東戰火陷入僵局，伊朗政權維持統治，川普的期中選舉將會非常不樂觀，不過《經濟學人》分析指出，要是戰爭走勢不如預期，川普還有方法挽救選情，他可以忽視納坦雅胡的政治利益，單方面宣佈勝利並結束戰爭。
